Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality appointed Bosch Projects as consulting engineer for Phase 1 of the Driftsands Collector Sewer Augmentation. The subsequent construction contract has been awarded to WK Construction.
The full scope of this 4-phased project will entail 4.2km of sewer pipes that are 1 500mm and 1 200mm in diameter. This augmentation will address the sewerage requirements for the existing and future developments for the western suburbs of Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality.
Phase 1 of the project entails augmentation of the existing 1 050mm diameter line with 1 850m of 1 500mm concrete HDPE-lined sewer. The new sewer line starts at Driftsands Wastewater Treatment Works, runs parallel to the existing line, then branches off to bypass the planned ACSA extension of the Port Elizabeth Airport Runway.
Over and above the 1 850m of 1 500mm ø Concrete HDPE lined sewer, the contract bill of quantities for Phase 1 entails 26 manhole structures, one diversion chamber, one division chamber and bulk earthworks. The depth of the trench excavation varies between 1m and 6m deep, with imported fill.
The contract document requires that 25% of the contract value be set aside for the development of emerging subcontractors, who will be employee from the local community.
This contract (Phase 1) is still in progress and the due date for completion is November 2018.
