A solution was needed for a new 165m long pipe bridge to carry a 500mm diameter irrigation pipe across the Mkuze River in northern Kwa-Zulu Natal. Our client approached us for an alternative solution to an initial costly solution. After a site inspection and a valuable engineering investigation, Bosch Projects suggested a new steel bridge supported from an existing railway bridge, thus avoiding a very disruptive and costly support system in the existing river bed. Utilising laser scanning technology to collect accurate ‘as built” data of the existing bridge, the new bridge was designed in record time and to very accurate tolerances. The accurate tolerance enabled the construction team to prefabricate the bridge steel gantries in manageable sections off site and then erect the complete bridge safely and within a week.
