Bosch Projects were lead consultants in association with BKS.
The project objectives were to increase assurance by supplying water during times of shortage to the existing 14 000 Ha Pongola Irrigation Scheme. The project also supplies purified water to rural communities near the dam as well as to communities near Pongola as part of a regional water supply scheme.

Intake and Outlet works
Type: 5 multiple level 2m x 2m off-takes controlled by selector gates in 2 sluiceways Height of structure: 56m Outlet works: 2 x 1200mm diameter pipes with 1 x 250mm, 1 x 400 and 2 x 900 sleeve valves Outlet Capacity: Limited to 10m3/s for each of the 2 sluiceways. Project Value: R140 million Date of Award: April 1997 Commissioning Dates: April 2000
This project received the SAICE National Award and Durban Regional Award for Excellence in Civil Engineering for SAICE in 2000.
