Booker Tate, which was acquired by Bosch Holdings in 2017, is working with Canal Sugar to increase the production and efficiency of its new beet factory at Al Minya, 250km south of Cairo, Egypt. The factory has a very low energy requirement and includes many innovative process stations utilising novel equipment that has been designed in-house. The slicing capacity of the factory is 36 000 tonnes beet per day, making it one of the world’s largest sugar beet factories. Operations started in 2022 and Booker Tate was invited to undertaken a Technical Audit of the factory during the beet campaign. The audit identified a number of improvement opportunities and the investment needed to implement the work. A Resident Technical Consultant from Booker Tate has been managing the implementation of the project work since October 2022, with the 2023 campaign due to start in mid-May. Canal Sugar will slice sugar beet grown mainly on its own 50 000 ha irrigated farm. Once fully developed, sugar production will reach 900 000 tonnes, bridging the gap between Egypt’s sugar consumption and its national production.
